It is back to school season again and the fairly empty roads we saw during the summer will soon be as busy as ever. As we brace ourselves for the traffic jams that are a staple of life in the UAE, let us remember to keep our cool and stay on the right side of the law. Road rage while stuck in traffic never leads to anything good. As more and parents take to the road to transport their children to school, let us take to heart the recent warning of the Dubai police to ensure all passengers in a vehicle are safely buckled up. Parents should ensure that they use age appropriate car seats. Children should be allowed to sit only in the rear seats to minimize danger in the event of an accident. The heat has still not abated and leaving children in the vehicles while they run errands, even if it is for a short duration can also have serious consequences. Recent statistics released by the Ministry of Interior indicate that the number of road traffic deaths in the UAE has fallen by 34.2 per cent in five years, from 712 in 2014 to 468 in 2018. It shows that initiatives like public awareness campaigns by the police and road traffic authorities, heavy fines for careless driving behavior and provision of traffic safety education to children and adolescents do pay off in the long run. This trend is highly encouraging and I would like to conclude with the fond hope that it continues in the future.
