This year has been a tumultuous one for the automotive industry thanks to many factors like the threat of tariffs which could affect costs, highly stringent emissions norms in the EU and the slowdown in China. Yet, I feel that these factors are mere speedbumps. They might slow down the pace of growth a bit, but the automotive industry is bigger than all this and will continue to have a significant impact on all our lives. It makes me really happy to note that Vietnam is joining the select group of automobile manufacturing nations with the new Vinfast brand. The growth we have seen in brands from Asia like Hankook, Kia and Hyundai is truly impressive and I hope that Vinfast too will be able to replicate this growth. With more countries venturing into the production of automobiles, consumers will have more models to choose from and greater access to models that might be more suited to local conditions. Hankook’s Kinergy tire for electric vehicles winning the IDEA design award highlights the fact that electric vehicles are here to stay and are now gaining widespread acceptance. In fact, the range of new automotive technologies that have been developed in recent years have totally transformed the driving experience. A modern-day Rip Van Winkle who went to sleep in the 1960s wouldn’t recognize the cars of today with their satellite navigation, individual climate zones, augmented reality dashboards and safety features like automatic emergency braking and blind spot detection. We have covered this in our article on car technologies of the future. With RTA testing Dubai’s first self-driving taxi here during the Gitex Technology Week, we are lucky to get a ringside seat to see the recent changes in the automotive industry.
