We are ending this year on a mixed note. The automotive industry has faced a lot of challenges this year including tariffs, trade wars and the imposition of tougher norms regarding fuel efficiency and vehicle emissions across the globe in order to minimize the damage vehicles cause to our environment. Sergio Marchionne who revived Fiat and Chrysler passed away in July. Recently, we witnessed the downfall of an industry titan, Carlos Ghosn, who made Nissan what it is today.Yet, 2018 was also the year in which many breakthroughs were made. Scientists and engineers are hard at work in academic institutions, tech startups and automotive companies refining and further optimizing technology related to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles. In June this year, the first driving licenses were issued to Saudi women. Automakers vied with each other to announce campaigns to appeal to this new demographic group in the kingdom.2018 was also the year in which Tesla arrived in Dubai. General Motors is another company that is aggressively targeting consumers who would like to switch to electric cars with the Chevrolet Bolt. In this issue, we feature an interview with Ahmed Soudodi, Head of Brand Chevrolet, Middle East who answered all the questions we had regarding the advent of electric cars in Dubai and the Chevrolet Bolt.In January this year, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced the formation of the Automotive Manufacturers Business Group, which has been charged with developing and advancing Dubai’s automotive industry. 2019 will be the year in which the UAE will turn from being a market for automobiles of all kinds to one that will eventually serve as a manufacturing hub for vehicles.Hamid MoarefPublisherPAGE 14Publishers Note :All images, designs, layout and advertisements are copyrighted.
