Universal Children’s Day was marked all over the world on November 20. In this context, it is important to remember that road injuries are one of the leading causes of death for children in the UAE. The government in the country is definitely moving in the right direction with the traffic law that came into effect on July 1, 2017. The use of seatbelts for all passengers is now compulsory. So is the use of appropriate child seats and restraints for children. The implementation of the law has made motorists more aware about the importance of taking adequate precautionary steps when traveling with children. The burden of keeping an eagle eye on tomorrow’s upcoming generation should not be left only to the government. It should be up to every one of us to drive safely and sensibly so that these children are safe when getting on and off their school buses or traveling with their parents and caregivers. They should also be safe when they are walking on the roads. They need to be aware about the basic tenets of road safety like stopping to look both ways before they cross a road, walking only on pavements and paying proper attention.Schools, their parents and other road users need to be highly conscious about the roles they can play when it comes to promoting road safety for children. Every one of these lives is precious and the first step we can take to help make them safer on the roads is by setting a good example. So, the next time you take to the wheel, think about whether the way you are driving is kid friendly. It might really change your outlook.Drive safe! Be safe!Hamid MoarefPublisherPAGE 14Publishers Note :All images, designs, layout and advertisements are copyrighted.
